Garth Hekler

Garth Hekler is a research analyst at the Center for Intelligence Research and Analysis. His work has focused primarily on China with a particular emphasis on China’s and other East Asian countries’ defense industry, research and development infrastructure, data sources, and research methodologies.

Mr. Hekler previously held a position in the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of the Chinese Economic Area, where he covered a broad range of trade issues, including trade in services, as well as basic industry and energy policy. Mr. Hekler has a M.A. degree in China and Southeast Asian Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

He is a fluent speaker of Mandarin Chinese, with advanced proficiency in Vietnamese and Korean.
