DGI has developed and demonstrated advanced techniques for automatic target recognition (ATR) with forward looking infrared (FLIR) imagery. Our methods offer the potential for dramatic improvements in reliable target detection, and classification with low false alarm rates. The highly variable morphology of FLIR targets is a major challenge to FLIR ATR. Initial detection of candidate targets at low contrast and in variable and structured clutter is yet another challenge. The ATR approach that we have developed includes special methods for clutter cancellation and normalization, thus providing consistent performance over a wide range of environmental conditions. Our method also uses a number of specially designed and tested techniques for initial target detection and for final target classification. |
